You could spend the better part of a week reading the entire contents of Parts 61 and 91 of the Federal Aviation Regulations. Generally, as part of a Flight Review or check ride, you will cover some of the more pertinent regs with your Instructor or Examiner.
I've put together a one-page PDF of what I believe to be the most relevant rules for Private Pilots. My favorite is 91.13 - what I call the "don't-do-anything-stupid" rule. If you do something and they can't find another rule to bust you on, they generally revert to 91.13 - careless or reckless operation.
Click here to download the PDF. You'll be able to click on the link for each rule to read the current text for each rule right from the government's website. Next month I'll present a list of relevant rules for Instrument pilots.
